my best job was as a goods guard with British Rail, early seventies, worked coal out of most collieries around Newport and Cardiff and iron ore into and coil and ingots out of Llanwern and Port Talbot [Margam]
even in the seventies most coal trucks werent braked, it could be quite an adventure coming down from Hafodyrynys with six hundred ton trains hoping to stop at Panteg and Coedygrig box.
At the other end of the scale then, struggling up to Big Pit on a Monday morning, light rain on rusty rails meant me and the fireman walking in front for miles putting stones on the track to help the sanders.
If you stopped on some of the bends above Abersychan thats where you stayed till a banker came up behind and shoved you on through
i dont know if it was just me but it was always bloody cold at Furnace sidings
i have had quite a few jobs over the years but this one will always bring me out in a rash of memories[/u] _________________ always in the shite |
